Fifth Sunday of Easter – John 13:31-35 and Acts 11:1-18

Until quite recently, people did not travel very far. For example, in Medieval times, Pilgrims might set off once in a life time to go out of their village and visit one of the great traditional shrines. Soldiers might go to war and so travel to places others only dreamed of. Merchants did travel to work their trade if they were wealthy enough. Some Students and Clerics made their way to the great cities to learn or teach. But the great majority of people never left their native village. When travelling in Europe, I came across older people who even today had never ventured out of their local area.

Second Sunday after Epiphany – John 2:1-11

Greetings to you in the name of Jesus our Saviour.

I want to preach to you this morning on the Word of God that I read to you, the Gospel lesson. Jesus turns the water into wine.

Heavenly Father bless us with your Spirit as we hear your Word, may you speak to our hearts, strengthen us in our faith, enliven us in our spirit that we may live joyfully, celebrating your presence and serving you with enthusiasm. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen

Dear Christian friends, how do you live? Are you a celebrating thankful people, or a bit pessimistic, worried about the future, wondering just how climate change is going to affect beautiful Cairns, wondering if really there is going to be a return of the global financial crisis and how that's going to affect you?

Bob Hawke is worried. I don't know if you saw the program. Andrew Denton interviewed Bob Hawke in a program that he is calling "The Elders." Last Tuesday evening there he was on our television sets, for those who cared to watch, and Andrew Denton said "you looked genuinely sad before, when you were talking about the world our children are coming into. Are you optimistic about the future of our planet?" Bob Hawke with his silvery mane, raked his hands through it, and said "I am by nature, and I have all my life by nature, been an optimist Andrew. But I've got to say that when I look at the facts in this world now, there are not too many grounds for optimism."

First Sunday after Epiphany – Isaiah 43:1-7

Grace, peace and mercy to you from God our Father and our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

It would be impossible not to acknowledge that this is to be my last sermon I will preach here in Cairns, certainly as your parish pastor. But having made this acknowledgement, it is equally clear that this congregation and this parish is founded on much more than any individual and definitely more than the pastor. To help us focus rightly on Christ alone, we have today’s Bible readings, especially the Old Testament reading from Isaiah and the Gospel reading from Luke. “John (the Baptist) answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” (Luke 3:16)

Heavenly Father, sanctify us in the truth, your Word is truth. Amen

Second Sunday after Christmas – Ephesians 1:3-14

Grace, peace and mercy to you from God our Father and our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

We are here at the beginning of a new year, a new decade, and a new day. All things are new once more, with all of the excitement and possibilities this opens up. I was reflecting on the new things we had bought and received as Christmas gifts as a family. Many of these gifts come with a warranty or guarantee. They are guaranteed to work as they are advertised for a specified time or else they will be repaired or replaced.

God has given us His guarantee that Paul describes in today’s second reading. “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” (Eph 1:13-14)

Heavenly Father, sanctify us in the truth, your Word is truth. Amen.
