Fourth Sunday after Pentecost – 2 Corinthians 8:7-15

Grace, peace and mercy to you from God our Father and our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Pastors and preachers have been guilty of seizing on this reading from Paul, and the reading that follows entitled, “A cheerful giver” as being an opportunity to preach on Christian giving in order to boost the congregational coffers. You know how the sermon goes, ‘God loves a cheerful giver so you really aught to give generously because God has done sooo much for you – you really owe it to him. And besides it’s halfway through the year and we are thousands of dollars behind in our budget…’ A friend mine who is a pastor describes this as the “Sermon on the amount”! Today I have no intention of preaching a sermon on giving money as an expression of Christian stewardship.

Third Sunday after Pentecost – Mark 4:35-41

Grace, peace and mercy to you from God our Father and our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

What are the things you are afraid of?  Genuinely afraid of, not just upset that you might miss out on a favourite TV show, or miss a game of golf or an anticipated fishing trip. What are you afraid of?

This is an important question but it won’t be popular because we don’t like to dwell on our fears. To fear something is to acknowledge that we aren’t in control of the situation but rather someone or something else may determine your future.

Second Sunday after Pentecost – 2 Corinthian 5:6-17

Grace, peace and mercy to you from God our Father and our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

One of the great oddities is how we understand belief. One of the most popular sayings, certainly as I was growing up was, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” How odd that we should only believe something when we can actually prove that something is true. It is odd because if we can prove something by observing it, by seeing it, we no longer believe it, but instead we know it to be true.

The key to Christian living is not living according to what we see with our eyes, but rather to walk with eyes of faith.

Heavenly Father, sanctify us in the truth, your Word is truth. Amen.

Trinity Sunday – Romans 8:12-17

Grace, peace and mercy to you from God our Father and our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Today’s reading from Romans teaches us that we are heirs of the Father. But the route to becoming heirs is not always smooth sailing. For anyone to realise their inheritance implies that a death is involved.

Heavenly Father, sanctify us in the truth, your Word is truth. Amen.
